McCullom Lake issue ignored by
McHenry County Health Department?

When the unusual cluster of rare cancer cases in the north McCullom Lake area triggered class-action lawsuits several months ago, the McHenry County Health Department did nothing but issue statements to reassure the public. The possibility that drinking water in the McCullom Lake area is contaminated with carcinogenic chemical wastes seems to be of little interest to the public officials charged with protecting our well-being.

Nothing substantive has been done to determine if the public health is at risk. Nothing proactive has been done to reduce exposure to possibly contaminated groundwater. Although one poorly publicized presentation has been held to inform the local residents of what is currently known, County officials seem otherwise content to sit back and wait for the lawsuits to wind their way through the courts.

County officials claim that there is no conclusive proof yet that a public health risk exists.
